The green LED spreads better in the dark and shows more details. It is preferred for both far-field vision and close-up shooting, such as reading maps. Green is more often used in military situations, because green light is supposedly less detectable by night vision devices.
The red LED is a low-intensity light that allows for covert action in the dark, improves night vision and even allows reading in situations with a strict light regime.
